The TAP Studio Arts Mentor program is a paid internship for undergraduate Studio Art majors, which provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience teaching and working with high school students for the Teen Apprenticeship Program (TAP). There is a strict Financial Aid Qualification for this program: students should have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the most recent academic year. Their Student Aid Report (SAR) must indicate an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $5,000 or less.
In the spring, TAP Studio Arts Mentors start supporting an experienced teaching artist and teaching assistant to implement TAP for high school students (ages 16-18) who are learning to teach visual art to children in New York City camps. Mentors shadow the teaching artist for several classes to learn about effective art instruction and lesson plan writing. Mentors will document apprenticeship training classes through taking photos, videos, and writing a detailed synopsis of the class, activities, and learning process.
In the summer, Arts Mentors help support and guide the teen apprentices as well as co-teach art classes in the summer camps. Arts Mentors help administer the program by identifying problems as they arise, submit daily updates, and document the program’s success. They also help supervise high school students on field trips to museums and galleries and learn to facilitate discussions about arts learning and engagement. By providing guidance and support to the high school students, they serve as role models; therefore, they must be professional at all times and maintain high standards of personal conduct.
The ideal candidate for this program is:

  • Creative and flexible
  • Interested in learning about how to teach art
  • Comfortable presenting and speaking in front of groups
  • Committed to serving as a mentor to high school students
